What is AfriCHI?
AfriCHI is Africa’s leading community and biennial conference dedicated to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research, design, and practice on the continent. It brings together academics, industry practitioners, designers, policymakers, and students to share research, showcase design work, and build lasting collaborations rooted in African contexts.
Since its first edition in Nairobi in 2016, AfriCHI has grown into the continent’s primary gathering point for anyone shaping how people across Africa interact with technology, from mobile interfaces and voice systems to AI, health tech, and civic platforms.
What is Human-Computer Interaction?
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is the study and design of how people use, experience, and are affected by technology, from the interfaces on a phone to the systems behind a hospital’s patient records. It draws on design, computer science, psychology, and the social sciences to make technology usable, useful, and equitable.
In an African context, HCI asks additional questions: how do we design for low-bandwidth environments, multiple languages and literacies, informal economies, and communities historically excluded from mainstream technology design? AfriCHI exists to centre those questions in global HCI discourse.
Our Pillars
Context-Driven Design
Shaping technology around the real conditions, needs, and constraints of the communities it serves.
Plural Futures
Imagining and co-designing multiple, diverse African futures shaped by dignity, agency, and self-determination.
Community
Building lasting connections across the Pan-African HCI, design, and technology community.
Interdisciplinary
Bridging technology, culture, art, and society in a uniquely African intellectual context.
Our Community
AfriCHI is sustained by a growing, continent-wide network. Each edition is organised entirely by volunteers drawn from this community, hosted by a different African institution.
